Zoos Near Calpe: Terra Natura, Mundomar, Safari Aitana and More

Calpe might not have its own zoo, but when it comes to zoos near Calpe, you’re honestly spoilt for choice once you’re willing to drive a bit.

Terra Natura and Mundomar are the closest, both near Benidorm. Safari Aitana is farther inland and offers a completely different kind of visit. BIOPARC and Oceanogràfic in Valencia take more effort, but both can justify the longer drive.

For most families staying in Calpe, Terra Natura is the obvious place to start. Mundomar is easier with small children, Safari Aitana is the most unusual, and BIOPARC is the best zoo overall if you don’t mind losing most of the day to the trip.

Those drive times can be longer in July and August, especially around Benidorm and Valencia city. Getting there’s usually straightforward. The return to Calpe is often slower if you leave when everyone else does.

Terra Natura Benidorm

If you only visit one wildlife park while you’re here, make it Terra Natura.

It’s close enough that the journey doesn’t dominate the day, but big enough that you don’t feel you have driven to Benidorm for a quick wander around.

The park is divided into themed areas with elephants, rhinos, tigers, monkeys, tropical birds, reptiles and venomous creatures.

What works well is the way many of the enclosures are laid out. Water, planting, rocks and changes in height often separate visitors from the animals, so the views feel more open than they do in older zoos built around rows of fencing.

There’s enough variety to suit different ages. Young children tend to enjoy the animals they can see quickly, while older children usually get more from the larger species, reptile areas and keeper activities.

The drawback is the walking. The park looks manageable on the map, but the heat changes that quickly. In July and August, a child who was excited at 10:30 can be completely fed up by mid-afternoon.

Allow at least five hours. You can get around faster, but once you add lunch, toilets, talks and children wanting to go back to something they missed, it becomes most of the day. Arriving when the gates open makes a noticeable difference in summer.

Terra Natura Ticket Prices in 2026

Published gate prices are €38 for adults and €32 for children aged 4 to 12 and visitors aged 60 and over, with children under four free with an adult ticket. Parking is €9 per vehicle. Online booking regularly brings this down to around €33 adult and €27 child or senior, so it’s worth comparing the current online rate against the gate price before you buy.

Reduced afternoon tickets may also be available during the final hours before closing.

Aqua Natura is the water park next door, and combined tickets are often available. The combination works when the children mainly want slides and pools, seeing the headline animals in the morning, then moving across once the heat builds.

For anyone who wants to see Terra Natura properly, I’d keep the zoo as a separate day. Trying to fit both in often means rushing the first park and reaching the second when everyone is already tired.

Mundomar Benidorm

Mundomar is the smaller, punchier cousin of Terra Natura, all marine animals, birds and scheduled shows that keep the day moving.

You will find dolphins, sea lions, penguins, flamingos, parrots, turtles, lemurs and several smaller species.

The dolphin and sea lion presentations are the main reason most families visit. That will appeal to some people more than others, so it’s worth checking what the day includes before buying tickets.

I wouldn’t take an eight- or nine-year-old there expecting a full zoo day. Mundomar works better with younger children, or when the presentations are the main attraction.

The smaller layout is useful with toddlers and children who tire quickly. You aren’t spending half the visit walking from one end of a huge park to the other.

The downside is value. Once you add food and travel, it can feel expensive for a park that many families finish in half a day. I’d be happier paying for Mundomar when I knew the children were excited about the shows, rather than simply choosing it because it’s near Calpe.

Three to five hours is normally enough. You can stay longer with lunch and every show, but there’s no need to plan your whole day around it.

Mundomar Ticket Prices in 2026

Published prices are €32 for adults at the gate (€26 online), €26 for children aged 4 to 12 and visitors aged 65 and over at the gate (€21 online), and free for children under four. Parking is free.

Mundomar follows a seasonal calendar and may not open every day throughout the year.

Safari Aitana

If you want a day that actually feels different, Safari Aitana is your answer.

The main route is done in your own car. Visitors follow the park’s feeding vehicle through the safari area, stopping near giraffes, zebras, elephants and other large animals.

Predators, including lions and tigers, are kept in controlled sections where visitors remain inside their vehicles and follow the park’s safety instructions.

It feels less polished than the big Benidorm parks, but that’s part of the appeal. The mountain setting and drive-through route are what make the extra journey worthwhile.

There’s also a separate area explored on foot, so the visit isn’t entirely spent in the car.

The weakness is that the day depends heavily on timing. Miss the main feeding tour and the experience loses a lot of what makes it worth the drive.

Allow around an hour to an hour and 15 minutes for the drive from Calpe. The final stretch heads inland through winding roads near Penàguila. A normal car is fine, but this isn’t a route where you want to leave late and hope to make up the time.

Safari Aitana Tour Times and Prices

The park opens at 11:00, with guided visits typically running at 11:00 and 15:00 and the main safari closed between 14:00 and 15:00. Last entry is at 16:00. Admission is €25 for adults and €21 for children aged 4 to 10. Reservations aren’t accepted, so there’s no way to book ahead. You simply turn up within the entry window.

The morning tour makes more sense from Calpe. It gives you more margin for the drive and avoids coming back through the mountains late in the day.

BIOPARC Valencia

BIOPARC is worth every minute of the 90-minute drive, and it genuinely deserves a full day.

The park recreates African habitats using planting, rocks, water and hidden barriers rather than obvious rows of cages.

Animals include elephants, giraffes, gorillas, lions, rhinos, hippos and lemurs, with areas based on the savannah, equatorial forest, wetlands and Madagascar.

The park feels better planned than the options closer to Calpe, and the animal areas flow into each other far more naturally.

On quality alone, I’d put it ahead of Terra Natura. For convenience, Terra Natura still wins.

BIOPARC is especially good with older children who may be less impressed by simply seeing a long list of animals. The setting and layout give them more to look at than a standard enclosure-and-sign format.

BIOPARC Tickets

Ticket prices vary depending on the time of year, so the exact figure moves with the season. General admission starts from €29.50, with reduced tickets (ages 4 to 12 and 65 and over) from €23.50, and free entry for children under four. Booking online saves €1 per ticket compared with buying at the gate.

A Valencia zoo day is longer than it looks on paper. By the time you drive back, stop for food or fuel and reach Calpe, the evening has usually gone. I wouldn’t plan much afterwards.

Oceanogràfic Valencia

Oceanogràfic isn’t technically a zoo, but skipping it from this list would be doing you a disservice.

It’s the largest aquarium in Europe and forms part of Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences.

Its marine habitats include the Mediterranean, Arctic, Antarctic, wetlands and tropical seas.

The underwater tunnels are usually the part children remember most, with sharks and large fish moving above and alongside the walkway.

You will also see beluga whales, penguins, sea lions, turtles, jellyfish and many smaller marine species.

Much of the attraction is indoors, so it’s the safest choice on a rainy, windy or unusually cool day.

Older children and teenagers are more likely to get something from it than they are from a smaller zoo.

Allow at least five or six hours, longer if you’re combining it with the science museum next door. I wouldn’t force both into one day with small children unless you’re happy moving quickly. The combined ticket may save money, but it can leave you rushing through two attractions instead of enjoying either one properly.

General admission runs around €43, with reduced tickets (children aged 4 to 12, retirees and pensioners, or visitors with a disability) around €32. Large or single-parent families get a further discount on both rates. Prices can shift with demand, so check the current rate when you book.

Practical Tips Before You Go

Leave Calpe early. This one tip alone can make or break your day in summer. The parks are cooler in the morning, the roads are easier and you avoid losing the first part of the day to queues and midday heat.

Book online where it saves money. Mundomar and BIOPARC normally offer lower online prices. Terra Natura also runs online offers at different times. Safari Aitana works differently, so tour timing matters more than online booking.

Take water and comfortable shoes. Terra Natura and BIOPARC involve more walking than many people expect. Even Safari Aitana has a walking section once the main car route is finished.

Don’t overplan the day. A zoo, water park, late lunch and evening in Benidorm sounds manageable when you leave Calpe in the morning. By 18:00, it usually feels like too much. With children, one main attraction is often enough.

Which One Would I Choose

If you take nothing else from this rundown of zoos near Calpe, take this: with only one day and no strong preference either way, I’d still go with Terra Natura. It’s the one where the drive doesn’t eat into the visit, and there’s enough happening that nobody’s asking to leave by lunchtime.

The other four are really about what the family actually wants from the day, not which one is objectively best. A memorable, slightly rough-around-the-edges experience points you toward Safari Aitana. A day built around a couple of scheduled shows with a toddler in tow points you toward Mundomar. And if you’re happy sacrificing the whole day for something genuinely better designed, BIOPARC or Oceanogràfic are worth the drive to Valencia.

Check the official opening calendar and current ticket prices before setting off. Seasonal schedules change, and arriving early matters more than most people expect.
